118 CARAT DIAMOND SET TO BE AUCTIONED IN HONG KONG – The 118 carat white diamond is said to be the size of a small egg and is one of the rarest white diamonds in the world.
Currently the flawless diamond is being displayed at Sotheby’s in New York but will be transported to Hong Kong where Sotheby’s will auction the magnificent stone.
Sotheby’s expects the diamond will shatter previous records; to date, the most expensive diamond auctioned was a 101 carat pear shaped diamond that fetched a staggering US$27 million, from buyer Harry Winston.
Sotheby auctioneers expect the 118 carat oval cut diamond to fetch anywhere between US$28 to US$35 million.
The diamond was mined in South Africa in 2011 and originally weighted in at a massive 299 carats; making it one of the largest diamonds ever to be found.
The media preview yesterday in New York caused quite a stir as journalists and guests gazed upon the stunning diamond.
Also to be featured in the Hong Kong auction is a rare and stunning 7.9 carat blue diamond ring which Sotheby’s expect will fetch in the region of US$19 million.
The auction date and venue has been set – October 7 2013 at Sotheby’s, Hong Kong and if you fancy getting your hands on any of the items then you will need to ensure you have a very large bank account.
