UPDATE: 2nd August 2013
All three assailants have now admitted to murdering Bobby Carter Jr. The police, as usual, a part of Thai justice, made the perpetrators reenact the scene. On appearing in court to plead guilty all three murderers were granted bail. The local police commander was quotes as say, in regards to bail, as “The men have taken part in a reenactment and so we have granted them bail. We have no problem with this.”
There is understandably outrage over granting any confessed murderer bail but this is usual practice in Thailand and goes further to showing foreign tourists the contempt that Thais have for their safety.
A number of forums are awash with this latest event and are calling on the public and tour operators to abandon Thailand as a holiday destination until the Thai Authorities acknowledge their failings and put tourist safety as a priority.
ANOTHER TOURIST MURDERED IN THAILAND AS AMERICAN IS STABBED TO DEATH – It was supposed to be a fun night out at the Longhorn Saloon in Ao Nang, Krabi; a popular tourist destination.
The Longhorn Saloon boasts a live band which is designed to allow patrons to join the band and jam with them.
Bobby Ray Carter Jr, from Dallas Texas, along with his son Adam were enjoying their night out with a few beers and decided to sing on stage. It is normal practice for patrons to place money in the ‘Tip Jar’ for the band members.
All appeared to go well until one of the Thai band members asked Mr. Carter to get off the stage after just a few minutes. Taking offense Mr. Carter demanded his tip money be return. At this point an argument broke out and the scene became ugly.
Both Bobby and Adam Carter decided to leave the bar but were followed outside by several of the Thai band members. The argument continued and soon after Mr. Carter was stabbed twice with a sharpened iron bar and his son Adam stabbed once.
Mr. Carter died on the way to hospital and Adam was later transferred from Krabi hospital to more modern facilities some two hour drive to the island of Phuket.
According to a statement given by local police officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jongrak Pimthong, the argument ensued after Mr. Carter failed to leave the stage as requested by the Thai band leader. Three Thai men have now been arrested for questioning over the incident, Ratikorn Ramin, 27, Sathit Somsa, 40, and Noppanan Yoddecha, 26.
Despite being stabbed twice the band leader Ratikorn Ramin has told police that he didn’t stab Mr. Carter as Adam Carter said but rather fell on the iron rod – twice apparently.
Once again Thailand shows it true face of tourism and it is little surprising that tourism is declining; according to on-ground reports we’ve received from business owners and hoteliers.
Despite these reports the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) continues to whitewash over the issues of tourist safety by simply sending out press releases showing figures of increased number of tourists; most believe these figures are a pure fabrication in order to make Thailand appear like a friendly tourist destination.
Krabi, Phuket and Pattaya are key tourist destinations but over the years the level of violent crimes targeting foreign tourists has increased dramatically and yet authorities refuse to take action.
Only last October a young British tourist, of just 21 years old, was stabbed and left for dead as a he tried to prevent a Thai gang from raping his girlfriend.
In a separate incident Jack Cole and April Clifton, also British, were attacked and stabbed by a group of Thai assailants.
The list of violent crimes against tourists, including rape, muggings and murder continues to rise and with the authorities seemingly unwilling to take charge these incidences are hitting an all time high.
If you are thinking about visiting Thailand please remember to take extreme precautions and keep vigil. Thailand is not the safe tourist destination the tour operators and Thailand wants you to believe and even a minor dispute can result in violence.
Try reading some of the articles above here on meebal.com; we have a couple of on-the-ground reporters who provide insight to the truth. These will give you some idea of what you are up against as a foreign tourist in Thailand.
