ARIZONA SHERIFF KNOWS HOW CONVICTS NEED TREATING – There’s a law man in Arizona that believes if you break the law you should suffer the consequences of your actions and face punishment.
I am not talking about merely imprisoning offenders but rather putting them to work and restricting prisoner access to luxuries such as cable TV and comfy jail cell.
Of course such inhumane treatment has the liberal-lefts running around in circles and gasping for air like a fish out of water… how could a Sheriff treat people in this way and yet despite their constant campaign Sheriff Joe Arpaio continuously gets re-elected as Sheriff in the county.
So what’s so controversial about Joe Arpaio? Why is he often labeled ‘inhumane’ and the ‘violator of human rights’.
When Joe Arpaio first took up office he decided that the usual black and white or bright orange prison garb really wasn’t much of a statement so he ordered the inmate to paint the inside of the local jail bright pink.
In Joe’s eyes something was missing; after all pink has a tendency to clash with most other colors and so the only sensible solution was to order all prisoners to wear pink. Pink jump-suites, pink socks, pink under, pink… well you get the idea.
This didn’t exactly go down well with the prisoners or the liberal lefties but Joe pointed out that being opposed to a color had to be racist and bigoted – this move quickly quashed any further opposition.
Joe Arpaio is a proactive and practical man and when he realized that Maricopa County was spending no less than $18 million a year on caring for stray animals he offered to take over the local animal shelter and the Country Supervisors appeared only too please to get it off their hands.
The first thing Joe did was to staff the animal shelter entirely of prisoners. He figured it would give them something productive to do and learn a new trade. Each inmate is assigned a number of animals to care for and each animal is walked twice a day.
Over the months many of the prisoners became highly interested in animal welfare and now a number of prisoners have become experts in animal behaviour and nutrition and regularly give classes to those people who adopt animals from the shelter
With the reduction of staffing costs the shelter is now operated annually on a budget of just $3 million; that’s a saving of $15 million, much to the delight of local residence and Maricopa County officials.
One couple reported that they rescued a dog from the shelter two years ago. The dog was already neutered with all the current regulatory vaccines, in wonderful health and had even been micro-chipped and all for the princely sum of $78.
The prisoners, for their efforts, earn $0.28 an hour but most are more than happy to work for free as this gets them out of the cells and provides them with something interesting to do. Prisoners are not paid out of the annual County budget allocated instead the financial records clearly indicate that prisoner’s salaries are generated from the adoption fees.
Joe also has a pretty impressive farm, which he donated to the county a number of years back. Today that farm is used to put prisoners to work so that they can not only learn to farm but to grow produce they can eat.
The farm is highly successful in producing all the fruits and vegetables that the inmates require and a fair amount of the meat as well. How successful is this project? Joe has managed to cut jail meals down to just $0.40 per serving and even charges the inmates for them.
A sizable hog farm is also attached to the property that again provides meat for the inmates but also fertilizer that is then used at the local Christmas tree nursery. This reduces the cost of a Christmas tree to the public; in fact you can pick up a live tree for around $8 and then plant it in your garden once the festive holiday is over.
Last year Joe was yet again re-elected with a majority vote of no less than 83% – I doubt any politician, anywhere in the country, could lay claim to such an overwhelming victory and is testament that what Joe does is just plain common sense.
Recently Joe got himself in hot water again with the ACLU after buying a number of buses and painting them with murals and a phone number asking residents to report any suspected illegal aliens.
As far as Joe was concerned Immigration and Customers Enforcement officials simply weren’t doing enough so he took it upon himself to train 40 deputies to enforce the law and simply captured and escorted any illegal immigrants back to the border.
Many of his prisoners complain to human rights groups that what Joe does breaks the law but Joe is fully aware of the law and his job is to enforce it. Prison should not be a holiday camp nor should it be a place to learn other criminal activities.
To put his point across Joe banned all smoking and all pornographic material in the jail. He also took away their weights; if it’s exercise they want there’s food to be grown on the farm and any farmer will tell you there is always lots of work to do.
On top of that he cut off Cable TV; however this did cause issues as a Federal Court Order was given that required all jails to have Cable TV. Not to be deterred and to comply fully with the law Joe reinstated Cable TV but the only thing that inmates can watch is either the Disney Channel or the Weather Channel – this measure complies fully with the Federal Court Order.
When someone asked Joe, ‘why the weather channel?’ he replied; “So the inmates know how hot it’s gonna be working on the farm tomorrow.”
Not to be label discriminatory Joe also recently introduced the same regime for the women prisoners who are also required to work on the farm.
Inmates will be inmates and there are plenty of complaints but Joe’s answer is always the same; “This ain’t the Ritz and if you don’t like it, don’t come back.”
During last year’s summer period outside temperatures rose to a record 116 degrees and Joe gave permission for all inmates to be able to strip down to their pink boxer shorts if they wanted to.
Within the jail tents temperatures rose as high at 138 degrees and inmates once again complained that this was ‘inhumane’. Once again Joe had an answer;
“It’s 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too. On top of that they are required to wear full battle gear, but they didn’t commit any crimes; so shut your mouths and quit your complaining.”
It is obvious for anyone to see, that Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a man of practicality and believes in abiding by the law. It is a shame that the rest of America and other parts of the world do not adopt his practical approach to dealing with criminals.
It is time our penal system changed and removed the stigma of ‘inhumane’ practices. Punishment should be punishment and the old saying applies… if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders Criminals should be punished for their crimes – not live in luxury until it’s time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers’ money and enjoy things taxpayers can’t afford to have for themselves.
