AUNG SAN SU KYI SILENT OVER ROHINGYA ATROCITIES – In the latest riots in Myanmar, formally known as Burma, it has left 43 ethnic Rohingya dead after Buddhist monks take to the streets, burning their village to the ground and even setting one on fire and leaving him to burn to death.
I know what you are thinking… Buddhists are supposed to be gentle people as Buddhism is often seen as a peaceful, reflecting and humanitarian religion. Unfortunately unless you have experienced countries like Myanmar and Thailand, both of whom is predominately Buddhist then the perception is completely misleading.
The native Rohingya are technically stateless Muslims regardless to their heritage of living in Myanmar for over 1,000 years. They are hated, ridiculed, beaten and often murdered by Buddhist in Myanmar and over recent years many of the Rohingya have tried to flee the country often going from the frying pan straight into the fire.
The world was shocked and horrified to learn that in 2009 it was a secret policy of the Thai Government to deploy its navy, seek out Rohingya refugees, disable their boats and leave them to die at sea – some were even simple gunned down. This was after the Tsunami hit Thailand in 2004 and where the world’s generosity help Thailand, and other South East Asian countries, such as Indonesia, rebuild. Unfortunately the Thais care more about themselves and widespread corruption resulted in billions of dollars being filtered into the bank accounts of high-powered and corrupt officials.
When the international community became aware of the so-called ‘Push Backs’, Thailand promised to take a more humanitarian approach although to this day the Rohingya are mistreated by the Thais. Recently reports broke of Navy personnel opening fire on a Rohingya boat resulting in a number of deaths – something the Thai Government are vehemently denying and trying to cover up.
Things haven’t improved for the Rohingya either in Myanmar or Thailand with Rohingya’s recently reporting to Human Rights Groups that many of them are being forced into slavery and prostitution by their Thai captures. It is nothing unusual to hear of girls from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as young as five being forced into prostitution by Thais who are often members of the Royal Thai Police.
Yesterday violence again erupted with hordes of Buddhist monks burning a Rohingya village and then setting about killing the Rohingya which is seen as nothing less than ethnic cleansing.
At one point a Rohingya man is set alight and left to burn while police stand by and watch without providing any assistance. When it comes to a Buddhist it appears that there is no level of human depravity low enough and many are asking the question; “Where is Aung San Su Kyi and why hasn’t she spoken out against the violence and atrocities leveled at this people?”
During the violence it was reported that someone in the crowd called for water to put the burning man out and get the response from the Buddhist monks was clear; ‘no water for him, let him burn.’
Human Rights Watch published a report recently which concluded the Myanmar authorities and members of Arakanese groups have committed crimes against humanity in a campaign of ethnic cleansing of Muslims.
The plight of the Rohingya continues and while we continue to support countries such as Myanmar and Thailand through the goods we buy and more importantly through tourism this and other atrocities against these people will continue.
There is only one way to put an end to it and that is to force Myanmar and Thailand to comply with international laws on Human Rights and the only way to achieve this is to cut off the flow of money.
The next time you decide to get on a plane to visit either Myanmar or Thailand then know this – you will be responsible for contributing to a country that openly violates basic human rights and will openly murder ethnic groups without any reprisals from the international community.
More on the recent violence can be read on the daily mail.
