A Police officer was shot dead on the MIT campus and a car chase by other offices ensued through the city. As police officers pinned down the suspects gunfire raged as the two suspects tried to shoot their way out of the situation.
The Boston Globe has reported that the men involved in this evenings shootout are the same men pictured in the photos of the Boston Marathon Bombings that the FBI released just hours earlier.
Eyewitness at the scene watched as police gave chase and then watched the gun fight break out in the Watertown area. It was reported by the New York Times that the two suspects fought to escape by firing on at least ten police officers that had surrounded them.
Gun shots from both sides continued to ring out for over two minutes until one Police officer drove his SUV directly at the shooter. The shooters continued firing and the damaged SUV dramatically rolled and crashed into two parked cars.
It was then that the two men threw an explosive device at Police officers and once it detonated one of the men ran towards police officers – he was then tackled to the ground and placed under arrest.
The other man, in the confusion, managed to escape in an SUV, breaking through the barrier of Police officers.
In the initial chase the men stole a black Mercedes where offices found backpacks and a bomb. The bomb is now being disarmed by the police bomb squad.
The dramatic events come just hours after the FBI released the photos of the suspects and views are that the two men, on seeing the news, panicked and attempted to leave the area.
Currently only one of the suspects has been apprehended and he is currently in a hospital under armed guard according to Massachusetts State Police spokesman Frank Schifone.
Police and FBI are reluctant to link these two men with the Boston Marathon Bombings until they have had a chance to examine the details more closely and question the suspect.
The District Attorney’s Office have confirmed that a Police officer was shot dead after responding to a report of a disturbance and as the officer entered the area he was shot several times and later died in the hospital.
