If the Government can renegotiate a sensible deal with the EU would you vote to stay in? Have your say… leave your comments below.
I am certainly no fan of the EU due to its incessant interference and conflicts of our laws and interests. The un-elected EU Commissioners continuously churn out legislation that is little use to anyone and in many cases highly damaging; all in the name of justifying their own jobs.
On the other hand EU membership does have a number of benefits. It allows us to trade with other EU member states with ease and allows us to move freely throughout the EU, either for work or pleasure.
Today’s announcement is designed to quell the rising concern that the British have over our involvement in Europe and many would welcome a change so that Britain is not ruled by the EU.
The ‘red card’ system would allow national parliaments to block any EU laws if they felt any such laws were unwelcome or detrimental to their own national interest. This, along with a number of other proposals, is all part of David Cameron’s bid to renegotiate our relationship with Brussels in order to stave off the public from demanding we pull out of the EU in the 2017 referendum.
William Hague stated that Brussels is failing to provide democratic accountability in the EU and that it will ask all national parliaments to support a new system where they can veto new EU laws.
William Hague is confident that he can win support from other Governments in order to allow Governments’ to decide which laws are allowed to be enacted.
I still have my doubts as to whether the EU is appropriate for Britain. I feel that a more simplified involvement is needed such as the ability to trade but as for Brussels having the ability to impose their legislation this should never be allowed to happen; especially considering that the individuals imposing such legislation have never been democratically elected.
