CHINESE PUBLIC EXECUTION – The Chinese Government have often been accused of being barbaric when it comes to handing out the death penalty. Whilst official figures are not known it is estimated that China executes over 3,000 people a year.
According to some experts China executes approximately 2 people per 1 million citizens compared to the United States executing just 1 person per 1 million citizens.
In recent times the Chinese Government has amended laws that provide for the death penalty which has seen a reduction from 68 to 53 offenses that carry the death penalty.
Justice in China is often swift and involves execution by a bullet to the back of the head. Some human rights advocates say the punishment is inhumane and cruel whilst advocates of the death penalty feel that the execution is swift and far more humane than current practices used in countries such as the United States.
A video has just hit the internet which shows a large crowd of villagers witnessing the execution of a prisoner. He is lead through scrub and bush to an open space with a sign around his neck that informs everyone of his crime.
An officer is reciting something on paper; maybe his crime and sentence and shortly afterwards another officer levels a gun to the back of the man’s head and pulls the trigger.
It’s all over; apart from taking a few photographs as confirmation that the execution has been carried out before removing his body from the scene.
There appears little reaction from the crowd as this is an acceptable punishment for certain crimes in China.
The question remains; is this truly barbaric or are the Chinese Government insistent that this is the only way to ensure certain criminals are never again allowed to harm another human being or engage in a crime that is against state policy.
