EDL LEADER TOMMY ROBINSON STEPS DOWN – Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Lennon) has announced that he has stepped down as leader of the English Defence League (EDL) in order to take up a post with an Anti-Islamic think tank.
The move has astonished many EDL supporters but has also, according to Tommy Robinson, has been widely supported in order to promote a better understanding of Muslims in Britain.
I have to say that I’ve listen to Tommy Robinson speak on a few occasions and he is a reasonably well-mannered and articulate person.
Again my views on the issues of racism and bigotry remain the same in that people of the political correctness indoctrination persuasion will rarely sit and listen to opposing views but rather find it much more accommodating and therefore easier to simply label such views as racist or bigoted.
I don’t honestly believe that the EDL is overly racist; in fact the EDL’s reputation can often be mirrored in the other major parties – the fact is that many British citizens feel that we are being overrun by Muslims and other ethnic groups and with it their culture and religious beliefs.
Surely attempting to stop the erosion of the British culture should be seen as patriotic – however for those who do refuse to listen to opposing view will often simply label it as a racist and bigoted attack.
The EDL has often been labeled as nothing more than racist drunken thugs who will take any opportunity to rally in order to simply cause offense. Yes I have witnessed scenes that have been more than disturbing but I could say the same for Animal Rights group’s protests.
In conjunction with Tommy Robinson stepping down as the EDL leader it’s co-founder Kevin Carroll also walked out with him and both are now intending to work for a leading anti-Muslim think-tank group in order to work towards greater social tolerance.
We often vilify others that are outspoken against other groups but what people often fail to realise is that this ability to speak freely allows for people’s honest and open views to be heard and as a result provides for open and honest debate
It is the only way mankind is able to resolve their differences and if people simply opened their eyes to this fact, without labeling it racist or bigoted, then maybe we can resolve our differences peacefully.
It is interesting to note that the think-tank Tommy Robinson will be joining is none other than Quilliam; an organisation set up by a former Islamic hate preacher Maajid Nawaz, who formerly ran Hizb ut-Tahrir.
How did such an entity come to pass? Maajid realized that listening and considering another’s points of view without having the need to label it was in fact constructive. It allowed him to consider why such views were prevalent and in return allowed him to explore another path – one that allows people to come together for the greater good in order to create social harmony.
According to reports Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll, who set up the English Defence League in 2009, now feel the EDL is no longer constructive and that it has been almost taken over by extremists; a situation that neither men approve of.
Tommy Robinson sincerely believes that Britain can counter Islamic ideology but not with violence but rather with open dialogue leading to better and more constructive democratic ideas.
Maybe, just maybe, those who believe that any comment made against the ideologies of Islamic fundamentalism will finally realise that they should no longer be viewed as simple messages of racist hate and bigotry but rather a means to promote open and honest dialogue.
I for one will remain convinced that racism and bigotry are simply indoctrinated into us by those who wish to silence our opinions. I fundamentally believe that we are all capable of living together but for such existence to occur we must be open and honest.
