HUSBAND GOES ALL OUT TO ENSURE WIFE SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA IS COMFORTABLE IN NEW HOME – Mention the word ‘Super Star’ and you might conjure up images of Tom Cruise or some other high profile celebrity.
The true super stars of this world however are not those appearing on the silver screen but rather just every day folk who care enough about one another to do whatever it takes to make another feel safe, secure and comfortable.
Here is the story of Matt Muircoft, an unassuming public super hero – yes, not just a star.
Recently Matt and his wife Julie moved home, but Matt had a problem; for his wife is suffering with dementia.
As those who are familiar with the disease they will appreciate that it can cause panic attacks when their surroundings feel or look unfamiliar and therefore Matt knew he had to ensure that their new home looked exactly like their last home.
Over the course of a few weeks Matt painstakingly recreated their old home interior décor within their new home in a bid to ensure Julie felt safe and secure in her new surroundings.
The couple’s move back to Scotland was promoted after Julie was diagnosed with dementia after living in Berkshire for the last 30 years. Matt felt that Julie should be closer to the family and therefore moved back to Motherwell, Lanarkshire.
Matt was told that the move would be good for Julie as memories could reappear of her earlier days and certainly being around family who could reinforce memories would be helpful.
Matt, at 75, decided that he couldn’t just move Julie into new surroundings as this could be extremely traumatic. As a professional painter and decorator he knew exactly what needed to be done and therefore set about recreating their old home décor to fit exactly into their new home.
Despite Matt being responsible for working on redecorating St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, for the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, Matt said that his decorating job was by far the most important of his career for he knew it had to be perfect in every way and to the smallest of detail.
Matt wanted to express his gratitude to the charity Alzheimer Scotland (www.alzscot.org) for providing so much support and giving expert advice on how to make the transition as stress free as possible for Julie.
Today Matt and Julie live comfortably in their replica home and it is heartwarming to know that there are Super Stars like Matt who will go to any lengths to make another person’s life easier; especially when that person is suffering from such a terrible illness.
Well done Matt – you’re way better than any star on the silver screen and Superman couldn’t hold a candle to you.
