ISSUES FACING NEW WEBSITE START UPS – There is no doubt that setting up a website is easy and really cheap. When I say really easy and cheap I mean just that – you can get a website up and running for less than $200.00 and within a couple of hours. So, with very little financial outlay and almost in no time at all you could have a fully operational business.
So we’ve established that getting a website up and running is easy enough but with all things commercial the idea, for most people, is to make money.
Like anything in life the more effort you put in the greater the reward. Unfortunately this principle doesn’t always apply to a website because in large your efforts are judged by Google and unless you can find a way to generate a lot of traffic to your website, other than relying on Google Search, then your efforts really won’t amount to much unless your website content is something that nobody else has ever covered – and that is highly unlikely considering there are well over one trillion web pages indexed by Google.
If you want maximum return for your efforts then you need to be familiar with a number of aspects regarding website development.
I think many new start-ups often fail to understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization) properly. It is NOT, as many would think, be simply a case of choosing the right Keywords or Key Phrases that a web page should contain in order to get a high ranking.
The truth of the matter is that SEO has gone far beyond simply inserting keywords or phrases, now other elements have to be taken into consideration, such as:
How many links point to the page?
Is the page content unique or is it very similar to other pages available?
How is the page lined internally?
Does the page have a decent PageRank?
Are the Keywords and or Phrases relevant?
These are just a few of the questions that SEO deals with for each and every page you produce.
It is now imperative that you think carefully about what sort of website you want to run and what content it will feature. The competition out there is fierce and without an edge the chances are that within a year you’ll abandon your website like millions of people before you.
Do you have sufficient time to run a website? This factor is often overlooked and this can be directly attributed to the fact that it’s so quick and easy to set up a website. The easy of entry is one thing but staying in and ahead of the game is something entirely different.
Here’s just a quick example of what I am talking about…
I launched Meebal.com in December 2012. It cost me exactly $156.00 to get it up and running. That was the easy bit. Since then I have worked on average of 14 hours a day, researching and writing articles, plus working on other aspects of the website, such as SEO, in order to promote the content that I write.
It’s now February 18, 2013 and so far I have managed to build my readership from 0 to around 80 people a day. Out of those 80 people that visit my site I am lucky if I can generate $0.20. Now you might be thinking that I’m totally insane for working these types of hours for what amounts to nothing. In fact when you look at this in real terms what I generate doesn’t even come close as to the cost of keeping Meebal.com online. Right, now you’ve gone from thinking I’m totally gaga to knowing I am… right?
Unfortunately, there are millions of people out there who sincerely believe in all the ‘Get Rich Quick’ schemes that are floating around the web. The latest breed of these is setup to look like an important News Articles with Headlines such as “Single Mom Makes $748.00 per Day Online”. When you visit these types of sites they are again backed up with what looks like a genuine news article but in fact they are all lame attempts to get you to sign up, at a price, to a system that very rarely bears any fruit financially.
The truth of the website is really about staying power and producing content that people really like. When a person likes your content they will share it. In turn this acts as a ‘Vote’ that Google takes into consideration for ranking your page. In essences the more ‘votes’ you have the better your rankings, but you have to watch out for unnatural votes. Unnatural links often occur when website owners engage in purchasing links. This is something you must completely avoid and it will do your rankings far more harm than good.
The idea is to build up a following of site users gradually – Rome wasn’t built in a day, but be warned if you engage in practices such as Link Buying then your website, much like Rome will be burnt to the ground instantaneously.
Patience and perseverance is the primary keys to becoming successful on the web, however the vital ingredients is ‘Unique Content’. This is the Holy Grail of a successful website but again you need to be realistic in the fact that what you are thinking has already, in all probability, been written and is now enshrined in the trillions of bits and bytes indexed by Google.
Just because the content you want to display is not completely unique you have to take into consideration that your personal views are unique. Therefore produce whatever content you like but ensure you give it your own personal flavor – it is irrelevant if people agree or disagree with the content you have, and you will always find a mixture of this on any web page. The idea is that you create content that comes from you and with this, over time and a lot of hard work; your web pages may just come to fruition and produce a monetary reward for your efforts.
