MOTHER ACCUSED OF STARVING 4 YEAR OLD TO DEATH AND KEPT CLAIMING CHILD BENEFIT – Amanda Hutton, 43, has been accused of the manslaughter of her 4 year old son, Hamzah Khan.
The accusations of any mother killing her child is always disturbing but Amanda Hutton is accused of much more than causing the death of her 4 year old by starving him to death.
The court heard that Amanda Hutton then mummified her child’s corpse for almost two years so that she could continue claiming child benefit in his name.
During a coroner’s inquest the jury was told how Amanda Hutton systematically starved the child and then kept his tiny corpse in a cot in her home; all wrapped up in a baby grow.
Coroner’s described in detail how the child’s growth had been so stunted that the baby grow he was wearing was designed to fit an infant of no more than six to nine months old when his body was discovered.
The trial, at Bradford Crown Court, went on to described how Amanda Hutton simply went on with life regardless of the boy decomposing. Phone records indicated that within hours of her son’s death she ordered pizza and for the next two years continued to claim child benefit for Hamzah.
The prosecution is accusing Amanda Hutton of manslaughter by gross negligence on two grounds; these being:
Failure to feed her son adequately and;
Failure to provide the child with medical assistance when required.
The prosecution maintained that Hamzah’s growth was so stunted that such a condition could only occur through months of abuse. The prosecution also maintains that such abuse, over a long period of time, could only ever result in one outcome – that was the death of an innocent child.
Coroners established that Hamzah had died on December 15, 2009 and was then kept by his mother until his body was finally discovered just under two years later on September 21, 2011.
Hamzah’s body was discovered after two PCSOs visited Amanda Hutton’s home in Crofton Road, Bradford, to investigate neighbour complaints of Amanda throwing dirty nappies into their garden.
During testimony the PCSOs stated that they noticed a bad smell from Amanda’s residence and alerted the social services and senior police officers.
Upon entering the premises it was noted that the home was in complete disarray and the living conditions was nothing short of squalor with rubbish strewn around the home. There was also faeces and rotting food everywhere and the home was covered with files.
Police officers then investigated the residence room by room and it was then that officers discovered the mummified remains of Hamzah Khan.
Amanda Hutton is being accused of being an alcoholic and one who frequently smoked cannabis.
According to Amanda Hutton, when questioned by police, Hamzah had become very ill on December 14, 2009 and the next day she visited a pharmacy for advice but was called back home as Hamzah had collapsed.
Amanda Hutton maintains that she tried in vain to revive Hamzah, however the prosecution quickly retorted that she made no effort to call for medical assistance; whether it was for an ambulance or a doctor and within hours of Hamzah dying she called out for pizza.
Over a period of nearly two years Amanda Hutton continued to claim child benefit in Hamzah Khan’s name.
Prosecution witnesses are due to give evidence over the next few weeks.
