I get to read and write about the most heinous crimes. Reporting or discussing instances like this is extremely difficult; even for a grown man I find it testing to hold back the tears for the loss of such innocence.
Little Daniel Pelka was not yet five years old. During his short life he had been systematically beaten, tormented and starved by his mother Magdalena Luczak and his stepfather Mariusz Krezolek.
There is of course more to this tragedy as the local authorities and child protection services appeared to turn a blind eye to Daniel’s plight.
The pathologist who performed the autopsy noted Daniel’s emancipated body, due to the lack of food, and carefully detailed the multiple injuries Daniel had sustained during his life. The final injury, a massive blow to the head, would see Daniel die two days later from the injury.
Teachers at Daniel’s school also noted Daniel suffering from black eyes with one teacher noting he looked like a bundle of bones and so severe was his weight loss he looked like someone suffering from late stage cancer.
During Daniel’s school days he would often scavenge food off classmates or worse rifle through the school bins in search for something to eat.
I’m supposed to remain detached when I write but I am not ashamed to admit that the tears are flowing; no child should ever be subjected to such abuse and our system of care seriously needs reassessing.
The court heard how Daniel was subjected not just overwhelming abuse by his mother and stepfather but also the appalling mistakes by the police, social workers, NHS staff and even his teachers. The years of abuse and the failings of our most critical services led to Daniel being starved, tortured, tormented and finally beaten to death.

As the jury sat in complete horror the prosecution left no stone un-turned or detail left unexplored. The jury was told how Daniel was often locked in a cupboard, force fed salt and was often held under water until he became unconscious.
So horrific was his torment that Daniel would often wet himself if an adult spoke to him with even a hint of harshness. This was a little boy who had been broken, not just physically but mentally; his life was simply a ritual of daily abuse.
Both Luczak and Krezolek denied murder and then set out to blame one another for Daniel’s death with his mother Magdalena Luczak pointing the finger at her lover for delivering the fatal blow to Daniel’s head after wetting his bed.
Mariusz Krezolek, in his defence, told prosecutors and the jury that Daniel had sustained his injuries in a series of falls.
Prosecutor Jonas Hankin, QC, quickly dispelled the lies by revealing a plethora of sickening text messages that clearly showed how they acted as a team in systematically abusing Daniel.
It was clear from the evidence that Daniel’s mother, Magdalena Luczak, put her lover, drugs and alcohol before the needs of her son and there is little question that both wanted Daniel out of the way.
Once again the British public is able to witness just how morally detached British society has become and whilst these two will no doubt spend a very long time behind bars this doesn’t help Daniel.
It is of course the British public who will pick up the tab for housing and keeping these two monsters in almost the lap of luxury while little Daniel lies cold. Is this justice? Not in my eyes and again this clearly shows the need for the reintroduction of the death penalty.
Daniel should never have been subjected to such abuse, no child should, and yet our politically correct indoctrination not only allows for these types of atrocity we are unable to punish the perpetrators in a suitable manner.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has set up a fund raiser in Daniel Pelka’s memory in order to help fight such abuse. If you would like to donate please click here
