NHS COUNTING THE TRUE COST OF HEALTH TOURISM – Yesterday a report came to light whereby the NHS released figures to the costs of foreigners using the NHS for medical treatment.
Initially chiefs at the NHS and indeed the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, estimated that health tourism was costing the taxpayer approximately £200 million annually.
Unfortunately the NHS has now revealed this figure to be 100 times the estimated cost. Yes, the abuse of the NHS by foreigners is costing the austerity ridden taxpayer of £2 billion annually.

Brace yourself for it’s actually a lot worse than you might think. We all know how incompetent most civil servants are and we are acutely aware of Government incompetence but the scale of this revelation will no doubt enrage the taxpayer.
Initially NHS executives and Jeremy Hunt estimated that the level of abuse was costing the taxpayer anything from between £20 million to £200 million.
To suggest such an estimate with such a vast divide clearly shows that sweeping changed must be made into the running of the NHS.
When anyone can suggest that the top end would be £200 million only to discover it actually comes out at £2 billion is incompetency at an unprecedented scale.
Look closely at the original estimates of between £20 million to £200 million – this alone clearly shows that neither the Health Secretary or NHS executives really had any clue as to the scale of the problem – the figures are simply too far apart to suggest any intelligent estimate.
How can anyone in an executive position or indeed the Health Secretary could be so blind is unfathomable.
Estimates and approximations are always used to calculate annual budgets and costs but to reveal such a cavernous divide is quite frankly beyond anything that can be considered acceptable – especially when the taxpayer is continuously squeezed at every opportunity from a Government that clearly has no clue what’s going on.
Of the entire cost of treating foreigners who simply walk in and demand treatment only 16% of the cost is every recovered, according to Government and NHS figures – I suspect this is somewhat of pure fabrication and is likely to be much less.
Yes it appears that Britain is the world’s dumping ground for the sick and economic refugees and under EU legislation and directives the taxpayer is forced to provide all manner of benefits to anyone entering our borders.
In defence of the incompetence the Government and NHS chiefs declared that it would be impractical or even inappropriate to charge certain patients in full, such as students or those with infectious diseases.
Has the Government never heard of ‘Health Insurance’? That is insisting that any foreigner entering Britain must have adequate health insurance before being allowed to enter the country.
Surely such a scheme would be easy to implement – that is of course providing that border controls are operated within set parameters which does not allow all and sundry to just wonder across our borders only to seek out the first hospital or indeed a benefits office.
Britain is certainly in a state of disrepair and to a level where the national debt is at such an alarming level that any increase in the interest rates is likely to result in Britain having to go cap in hand to either the EU or the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout.
Yes, contrary to the rhetoric that George Osborne continues to spout that Britain’s economy is recovering the truth is that Britain is merely treading water in the increasing sea of public debt.
The NHS is the ‘darling’ of British society; in fact since its introduction in1948 the NHS has defined British society as a nation of those who care about their fellow citizens. However, the NHS was never designed to ‘heal the world’s sick’ nor was it designed to provide jobs on excessive salaries for friends and family members in Government.
If Jeremy Hunt, and indeed any executive in the NHS, had an ounce of moral fortitude between them they would all publicly apologies for their failings and resign.
Unfortunately, as we witnessed with Sir David Nicholson, those in power will protect their friends and their exorbitant salaries at the taxpayer’s expense regardless of overwhelming public opinion – so much for living in a democratic society.
It’s not just those in direct powers, such as Jeremy Hunt, for the opposition Labour Health spokesman Diane Abbott, actually had the tenacity to state that even considering charging foreigners to use the NHS is nothing short of xenophobic; other’s have even suggested that we should not overstate the problem.
I’m not quite sure how anyone could consider £2 billion of taxpayer’s money to be a trivial matter and certainly the issue of getting foreigners to pay for the treatment they receive should never be viewed as xenophobic – well not just to satisfy the views of Diane Abbott who clearly doesn’t have the slightest idea of what she is talking about.
Yes let’s all laud Britain’s attributes of being a humanitarian nation – that notion is of course admirable right up until the system collapses under the weight of debt and already British nationals are waiting years for operations that should be readily available.
Why can’t Britain follow suit of Spain? After all they charge foreign students £50 a month to ensure that the cost of health care is covered.
Australia is another prime example as they charge £260 per year for student and this even has its restrictions.
It appears that our indoctrination of ‘political correctness’ simply no longer allows us to call a spade a spade – no, we have to find a politically correct term and in the process dilute the issue to a point whereby it appears that there really isn’t a situation in the first instance.
Britain has certainly become a nation whereby the blind are leading the blind and in the process sinking the nation under to mountain of debt that appears perfectly acceptable by those being awarded vast salaries; whilst the rest of us on minimum wage are force to hand over the little we have, by the way of taxation, in order to fuel the greed and incompetency of others.
You can label this any way you choose but the stark reality is that this is theft of public money on an unprecedented scale and the only way to put a stop to the taxpayer being continuously raped is to introduce the requirement that anyone landing in Britain is required to have extensive health care insurance.
