PERU DRUG MULE MELISSA REID PLEADS TO BE MOVED TO THE UK – In late December 2013 both Melissa Reid and her drug mule accomplice Michaella McCollum Connolly were sentenced to prison in a Peruvian jail for a period of 6 years and 8 months each after pleading guilty in attempting to smuggle £1.5 million of cocaine out of Peru through Lima Airport and into Spain.

At the time of sentencing both drug mules were hoping the judge would show leniency considering they pleaded guilty but the judge took the view that drug smugglers across the world need to know that Peru isn’t a soft touch and that such a crime must be punished adequately.
Parents of both Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly were reported to be distraught at the term imposed and yet they effectively escaped a full 15 year sentence by pleading guilty.
Now Melissa Reid is pleading with the British Government to transfer her out of Peru and serve out her remaining sentence in the UK at the expense of the British taxpayer.
Of course Melissa Reid is none too happy with her current living conditions but prisons in Peru focus of punishment not rehabilitation.
The Peruvian Government also has far better things to spend taxpayer’s money on rather than providing criminals with what is little more than luxury accommodation as we do in the UK.
According to reports Melissa Reid’s parents have already paid the £3,500 fine which means there daughter is eligible to apply for a prison transfer agreement.
As I sit here writing this article I wonder if Melissa’s parents would be gracious enough to cover the cost of her transportation and imprisonment in the UK in order to save the taxpayer being financially raped for their daughter’s stupidity and ultimate greed.
Yes Melissa, along with her drug mule friend Michaella McCollum Connolly, blamed their predicament on outside forces but as yet the Peruvian authorities have found nothing to substantiate their claims.
From the evidence that has been uncovered it appears the two drug mules simply wanted a lavish lifestyle and therefore ventured into drug smuggling.
No doubt there are human rights groups that will be supporting Melissa Reid’s case for being moved to the UK (family life and all that jazz) but what about the victims of drug abuse?
Does anyone really care about the thousands of families the £1.5 million in cocaine would have devastated?
It certainly appears not for I can’t find news publication taking up their cause.
In my view Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum Connolly should be left to serve out the full 6 years and 8 months in a Peruvian jail and the British Government, or rather the British taxpayer, should wash their hands of them.
Once they are released then it should be up to them or their parents to find and pay for transportation back to the UK and hope that both have learned a very valuable lesson.
