The lyrics to the song ‘Diamonds are Forever’ really does ring true for many people, they don’t lie or deceive you and if you can afford to hang on to them; never leave you.
Of course there are diamonds and then there are incredible diamonds one such Diamond recently broke the record for the highest price fetched for a Blue Diamond as it went under the hammer yesterday at Bonham’s selling for an eye-watering £6.2 million.
This is no ordinary diamond; it is one of the rarest forms of diamonds that can be found on the planet. With its crystal clarity this beautiful blue diamond weighs in at 5.30 carats which equates to the buyer paying £1.18 million per carat.
There was, according to reports, a real ‘buzz’ in the auction room as the diamond was brought out to view and international traders then began battling it out to own it. It was originally estimated that it would selling for around £1 million but as the bidding began it was obvious that certain people in the room were prepared to pay a lot more for its acquisition.
The diamond, set in a stunning ring, was the creation of master jewellers Bulgari whose clients included some of the world’s most famous and wealthy people, including Elizabeth Taylor.
Blue and other rare coloured diamonds rarely become available for sale which is why this particular piece sold for six times its estimated valued.
Probably the most famous of all Blue Diamonds is the ‘The Hope Diamond’ which was first brought by King Louis XIV of France in the 17th Century. It is an imposing gem weighing in at a massive 45.52 carats. The Hope Diamond originated from India but was stolen from the Crown Jewels by thieves of the French Revolution.
