ROYAL CHARTER ON PRESS REGULATION APPROVED EFFECTIVELY KILLING DEMOCRACY– The Establishment has never been keen on the press being able to investigate, probe and indeed scrutinise what they get up to and now for the first time in 300 years those in power finally have the ability to stifle freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
The Privy Council has now approved the Royal Charter on press regulation and despite calls to Her Majesty the Queen not to sign the Royal Charter it was of course a foregone conclusion, as a constitutional monarch Her Majesty had no choice but to sign away our freedom.
“Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe.” Thomas Jefferson
Should the press be controlled by a Royal Charter? The issue, since the revelations of the News of the World’s actions over phone hacking broke, it did become apparent that the press should be held accountable in as far as an arbitration service would be useful in order to fine and force the press to issue an apology.
Is that what we have with a Royal Charter? Unfortunately the answer is no and the very pillars of democracy have been shaken to their very foundations – or rather torn down.
The press wanted a self-regulatory system but those in power wanted much more; they wanted a way to silence the press, to gag it and tie it up so that they could effectively hide whatever they wanted – the Royal Charter delivers this ability in abundance.
Yes the politicians have told us that the Royal Charter will preserve freedom of the press but anything that is state controlled is open to abuse and oppression.
It is clear to see that any rules made by politicians for politicians will only be abused and effectively they are now able to change the rules to meet their own ends.
Of course those advocating the Royal Charter will tell you that your concerns for free speech and democracy are unfounded and that the Privy Council is not intrusive; that’s like telling you that a cyanide is fine provided consumed in minute quantities.
The truth is that the Privy Council is not a panel of independent experts but rather active Ministers of our Government; there is nothing impartial about how the Royal Charter was devised and implement and certainly far from anything any right minded individual would call democratic.
Could the Royal Charter be further changed in order to restrict the press further? That of course is why Government so desperately wanted a Royal Charter and not an Independent Press Body.
They knew full well that an independent press body was never going to give them the ability to fully control the press but with a Royal Charter all they need is a two-thirds majority vote in Parliament and they can make all the changes they like.
It could be conceived that this is a reasonable safeguard and yet it’s not better than allowing a fox to guard a hen house from the inside.
Effectively Government now has full control over the press for it is clear that Minister’s, if they feel threatened or have a fear of being exposed will rally and amend the Royal Charter to their own ends.
Look more closely and the Government could take this a step further by simply amending the original Act that currently requires a two-thirds majority vote which can be achieved with just a one-vote majority.
We are all aware of what brought us to this point; that being the need for politicians to be able to hide the truth and the ‘Hack Off’ group finally satisfying their own vengeance upon the press.
“In his Guardian column last week, Hacked Off supporter Steve Coogan seemed to think this is all improbable, claiming that no politician wants to prevent ‘investigative or public interest journalism’. As someone who spent a decade on the Opposition benches exposing government scandals against the Blair administration’s constant culture of cover-up, I found this statement astonishing.” David Davis, Daily Mail
On a much darker note we have The Guardian leaking Edward Snowden’s documents he acquired from the NSA. I have yet to see one politician come out to defend The Guardian for publishing the leaked documents; all of which show how the UK and the U.S are culpable of spying on not only its citizens but other world leaders.
Again the whole issue of the Royal Charter stemmed from phone hacking and in the process the Government has used it as a tool to finally silence the press. Unfortunately it didn’t stop the Government from using the very same tactics in order to spy on members of the public or indeed their allies.
Mr. Cameron last week spoke of how the press must now adhere to the Royal Charter and demonstrate ‘social responsibility’ for if the press refused to do so then Government would have no choice but to step in and take action.
If you didn’t have any faith in the current Government then the Royal Charter will leave you, as it does us at meebal.com exasperated and completely despondent – we never expected to see the day whereby our Government would take away democracy.
Meebal.com for one will not bow down; it’s time we moved our small operation to a country where democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of the press are still viewed as the very pillars that hold up a democracy.
Now that the Royal Charter has been fully implemented Mr. Cameron is free to subvert the course of justice and fully protect his tenure because he can no longer be held accountable for his deceptions.
Today Britain lost democracy and effectively the 2015 General Election is worthless as a tool to democratically elect a new Government for who is to say that what the press want to publish will not be doctored in order for Mr. Cameron to covertly re-install himself as Prime Minister.
Watch carefully as Mr. Cameron and his Ministers start using the ruse of ‘national security’ to cover up their dirty dealings and anyone who dares oppose them could face vast fines or even imprisonment.
Lessons of dictatorship have obviously been ignored. We have learned nothing from the communist days of Russia or what goes on behind the walls of North Korea and yet Mr. Cameron will openly admonish North Korea for their lack of democracy – it’s just another lie for he obviously condones the ideology of totalitarianism and effectively with the Royal Charter that’s exactly what he has.
Look closely at the world’s free press for it was only Britain that openly attacked a newspaper for publishing Edward Snowden’s documents. Even the U.S Government refused to openly threaten those newspapers that did publish the documents.
Clearly, in the minds of many and certainly of us at meebal.com, The Guardian did nothing wrong other than to cause the Government a severe amount of embarrassment; but the Royal Charter will now effectively take care of any such future embarrassment.
Meebal.com would be the first one to stand up and admit that the press doesn’t always get it right; certainly this was the case with the News of the World and its phone hacking agenda.
However, no person can be free under a system of oppression by its Government and today the signing of the Royal Charter has unequivocally been implemented in order to suppress and control the press and in the process oppress the people of Britain.
Today, after 300 years of free press and your right to be given the truth, has been removed and with it your democracy.
I am thoroughly ashamed to be British and I now have no choice but to make plans to leave Britain for good as I refuse to live under an oppressive regime which is operated by thieves, liars and above all traitors.
Yes, Mr. Cameron is all of those but now of course he has the ability to stop the press publishing the truth.
