SHOPLIFTER SHOWN KINDNESS BY POLICE OFFICER – Life is filled with choices, both good and bad, and the fact remains that our choices influence and affect others around us.
In the news recently came a story out of Dade, Florida involving police officer Vicki Thomas who responded to a shoplifting call only to encounter Jessica Robles, a young mother of three. When asked why she was shoplifting food, Robles explained that there was no food in her home.

After running a background check on Rubles, Officer Thomas saw that she had no priors, in fact no criminal record of any kind and saw an opportunity to make a difference. Instead of arresting her, she charged her with a misdemeanor and then took Rubles on a $100 shopping trip saying:
“I made the decision to buy her some groceries because arresting her wasn’t going to solve the problem with her children being hungry.”
After getting Rubles home with the groceries Thomas met her children and was heartbroken when the oldest child told her, “It’s not fun to see my brothers in the dirt hungry, asking for food, and we have to tell them, there is nothing here.”
This was just the beginning of the kindnesses for Rubles. As news of this story broke, people responded in kind and donated an additional $700 to Rubles and her family. She has been overwhelmed by the generosity she and her family have been shown and has promised that once she gets on her feet, she will help someone else out.
Wait, because if you think this story couldn’t get any better, you may be surprised to learn that a local business owner invited Rubles in for an interview and ended up hiring her on the spot as a customer service rep. Talk about positive change!
“There’s no words how grateful I am that you took your time and helped somebody out. Especially somebody like me.” Jessica Robles
Now why can’t our news stations find and report more stories like this one? If we heard positive news more often, I believe that we would be encouraged and inspired to be kinder to one another.
As it is, with all the nasty news that saturates us with murders, kidnappings, arson, theft and every other unsavory acts known to mankind we are not only becoming numb to the pain and ugliness of the world, but also shy away from one another out of fear and mistrust; rather than working together to make the world a better place for us all.
Let’s learn a lesson from Officer Thomas and make the effort to change a life when we can; and when we find ourselves on the receiving end like Jessica Rubles, let us take that gift and use it with the goal of passing along goodwill to someone else.
