SPAIN CONNING TOURISTS INTO PAYING FOR EMERGENCY TREATMENT – The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is specifically designed to allow ALL EU citizens the right to have emergency medical care under EU laws.
However the Spanish have been refusing to accept the card therefore conning patients into paying hospital bills and insisting tourists claim on their travel insurance.

Have you ever been forced to pay for your emergency medical treatment in Spain after they refused to accept the EHIC? Have your say… leave your comments below.
It has now been discovered that Spain is actually tricking British holiday makers into paying huge bills for emergency medical care that they are entitled to, under EHIC, for free.
Under EU law any British citizens is entitled to free medical care within the European Union. The cost of any care is then billed to the NHS; however Spain has taken upon itself to reject the EHIC and charge British nationals for any treatment and advice them that they should claim on their travel insurance.
We all appreciate that Spain, and a number of other EU member states, are having a hard time financially; but most of this was bought upon themselves due to their Governments uncontrollable spending and the realization that they would be bailed out by the UK and other EU member states.
The Spanish healthcare system is running on a shoestring budget but that is simply no excuse to flout the laws that are imposed upon the rest of the EU member states.
It was only a few weeks ago that I reported on the fact that the UK’s National Health Service hands over millions each year to EU member states for hospital bills that British citizens racked up while traveling in the EU.
Last year the British Government handed over £247.3 million but clawed back just £3.2 million from Spain due to treating British citizens in Spain and Britain treating Spanish citizens in the UK.
Once again the British are being fleeced by other EU member states. It’s not enough that we continuously bail them out but it appears that they are even willing to flout EU laws in order to save having to bear the cost of treating people; even thought this cost is later covered by the member state.
Travel insurance companies are rightly going to refuse paying out for medical treatment where it is supposed to be covered by the EHIC therefore leaving my British tourists out of pocket.
It’s time the EU Commission did its job and put an end to this debacle and what is little more than a scam on British tourists.
