TAKING ON THE INTERNET TROLLS AT THEIR OWN GAME – There is nothing, in my opinion, worse than a coward who attempts to vilify others under a cloak of anonymity.
Yes the internet is full of vile little trolls that set about tormenting others just to give their own sad little lives some meaning or purpose. I suppose we really should feel quite sorry for these inadequate souls.
Professor Mary Beard is a prominent historian and TV personality. I’ve never met Prof. Beard but from listening to her views on TV I can say that her intelligence and poise of diction denotes a highly intelligent individual. I would also venture to say that Prof. Beard is most likely to be a warm and wonderful person.
I have watched a number of TV debates where Prof. Beard has given her views and I don’t always agree with what she has to say but her passion is unquestionable and above all she has the right to voice her opinions.
The trouble with ignorant people, and of course internet trolls, is that they often refuse to consider a differing opinion and without the intellect to debate they resort to vile name calling.
Prof. Beard is no stranger to being attacked on her Twitter account. She has over the years had a number of trolls engage her in a vile rant.
In a recent case Prof. Beard was attacked by @rawlings153 who called Prof. Beard a ‘filthy old slut’; you would of course expect better once you realise that the young man involved was a University student, but there again with the state of education maybe not.
Regardless of what or who @rawlings153 is, it is appalling that anyone could openly attack someone in such a way. Again this clearly shows that some people simply do not have the intellect to engage in healthy debate if they disagree with a different point of view.
The nice thing about this particular instance is that Prof. Beard decided enough was enough and instead of shying away from the troll she decided to confront him and retweet his tweet to all 42,000 of her followers.
It wasn’t long before one of them knew who @rawlings123 was and asked Prof. Beard if she would like the name and address of his parents as he knew them and said that they would be most upset over the disgusting twitter message he posted.
This particular message was also retweeted to @rawlings123 himself and within minutes he came back with a very groveling apology.
Prof. Beard made a statement to the press regarding this incident and said; “Too many people shy away whereas they need to tackle the problem head on and fight back. I increasingly opt for the name and shame scenario and oust these people.”
Most trolls don’t like their vile rants to go beyond the confines of the person they are attacking and certainly sharing such an attack with your friends who in turn stands with you and fights back is not something a troll wants to get into.
Once the true identity of a troll is discovered it often results in an apology or their account quickly being deleted.
Remember have strength if you are confronted by a troll and acknowledge that these are sad little individuals who probably sit in front of their computers all day long without any real social interactivity; they are sad people with sad lives.
Well done Professor Mary Beard; again you are a shining example of intelligence and courage that we can all learn from.
To finish this article I would like to say that @rawlings123 has apologized and asked for people to stop baiting him. The tables have been turned and he has suffered so please don’t lower yourself to his activities by contacting him and berating him; he’s a sad enough individual as it is without anyone adding to his mental problems.
