TERRORIST TWITTER ACCOUNT TAKEN DOWN BY TROLLS – The words ‘terrorists’ and ‘trolls’ have most people turning red with fury but when combined actually have a completely opposite effect.
We often associate online trolls as nasty individuals who relish the opportunity to bait other online users with extremely hurtful remarks; and for the majority of trolls this is exactly what they get up to.
However yesterday a story broke of one Twitter users, J.M Berger, a Security Analyst, who engaged in trolling a known Al Qaeda Twitter account with surprising results in that he; along with his other followers managed to get it shut down.
It started off as a research project following a hashtag used by terrorist. The hashtag was designed to allow other supporters of terrorism and jihad to suggest ideas for Public Relations material.
J.M Berger basically hijacked the hashtag and asked his followers to give them some suggestions and they didn’t hold back.
One twitter follower wrote; “Why don’t you make a movie titled ‘Dude, Where’s My Car Bomb?” whilst another posted; “Why not open up a fast food joint and call it ‘Jihad Joes’”
There were quite a few others and these satirical messages soon started to take their toll. One twitter user even suggested that they could raise money by selling off Osama Bin Laden’s porn collection on eBay; it was alleged that the Navy Seals found a stash of hardcore pornography during the raid in 2011.
The insults and joke came thick, fast and furious. Eventually Twitter took down the account in which Berger wrote; ‘Nicely trolled everyone; couldn’t have done this without you.”
I doubt anyone would agree that trolls provide any real service to humanity but on this occasion it clearly shows that positive action in the fight against terrorism can be achieved when like-minded people come together.
Do you think this was an effective way to deal with terrorist promoting their hatred online or are the trolls’ simply adding fuel to the fire? Please leave your comments below.
