THAI UNIVERSITY STUDENT POSES WITH GRADUATION BANNER GIVING A SEIG HEIL – Following on the report recently that Chulalonkgorn University, Thailand’s top academic facility, allowed graduates to create a ‘Congratulations’ banner that depicted Adolf Hitler giving a nazi salute things have take a more dramatic turn.
After the Thai Government received a number of complaints from the German and Israeli Ambassadors, the Dean of Fine and Applied Arts Faculty Professor Supakorn Dispan, apologized profusely for any offense that putting up such an image might have caused.
The ignorance of so-called learned people is breathtaking with the Dean providing the explanation that the mural was supposed to depict that there are both good and bad super heroes in the world.
The questions on most people’s minds was when did Adolf Hitler become a super hero and how ignorant is the Dean and students for suggesting such a thing.
The Dean went on to say that he personally did not think the mural was a good idea and that he would talk to the freshman responsible for the design.
The one thing you learn very quickly about Thai society is that it bears no resemblance to anything we know in the West. It is almost incredulous for a university that likes to put itself on par with the likes of Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge and yet teaches very little in the way of world history; it’s like nothing that goes on outside of Thailand is relevant.
How ignorant are the Thais? Well, considering the offense this incident has created it hasn’t stopped the graduating students from standing in from of the Graduation Banner having their photo taken and even giving a Nazi salute.
Is this a case of trying to deliberately bait foreign ambassadors or are the students really that ignorant to what Hitler stands for?
The truth is the Thai education system is not really any type of education system we in the West experience. For starters we have to study and attend classes in order to enable us to successfully sit the exams.
Thailand of course has a completely different set of standards; that is a student pays the entry fees after which the degree is guaranteed, due to a ‘no fail’ policy the Thai Government have installed.
One commentator made this assertion… “Ignorance is bliss and I can assure you that the Thais are an extremely blissful race of people.”
Whilst there are many Thais who are campaigning for the Government to step up to the mark in order to increase education standards, stop human rights abuses and refrain from buying votes with populist policies it is unlikely to change anytime soon in a highly corrupt society that breeds utter ignorance and contempt for others; especially foreigners.
