THAIS VISITING PHUKET DEEPLY ASHAMED – Not ten days ago we published a story where one couple detailed their disgust at the holiday island of Phuket, Thailand.
The article was met with an uproar of deeply offensive comments; mostly from the expat community.
Prior to this article meebal.com received a story, who we referred to as Fon, in order to protect her identity. The story was a heartfelt rendition of how she was ashamed to be a Thai national – mainly due to the way the Thai authorities and Thai people treat foreign nationals.
This article received a very mixed response; many congratulating her on her courage to speak the truth whilst others condemned the story as nothing more than a fabrication in order to garner attention for meebal.com.
Thailand appears to be a very sensitive subject; especially within the remit of tourism and expats. Some feel that the whole idea of speaking out and reporting Thailand’s issues is nothing short of taboo whilst other feel the truth must be told in order to effect change.
One thing we at meebal.com learned very quickly is that many foreign expats will defend Thailand to the death and refer to anyone having an opinion as merely being ‘Thai Bashers’.
Thailand is not unique in having internal issues with corruption, failing infrastructure or a Government that appears to be only concerned with those running the country. No, all countries including the U.S, Britain and almost every European country has issues where members of the public would like to see change.
So was meebal.com wrong to publish such damning articles about Thailand? Let’s dispel a myth here… meebal.com is about news, world news to be precise, and other topical articles. However meebal.com is not your garden variety news publication – we provide a voice. Our remit is to report issues that affect people and we do so in the most open and honest way we know how.
Journalism is purely about giving the facts; it does not allow for an opinion. Meebal.com takes a more human approach because we and those who provide stories want to be heard.
Despite some of the reader’s comments being offensive and most vile we did not moderate any of them. We live in a democracy and therefore everyone has the right to voice their opinions – whether we, or you, agree with them or not.
As for the article by Fon; who many thought was simply a fabrication (like we have nothing better else to do) another article has just broken on Phuketwan.com.
This article details how two Thai ladies decided to visit Patong, Phuket from their home in Samui, Thailand. They took the decision to explore Patong’s nightlife after reading several articles on Rihanna’s recent trip and the comments that she made in reference to the sleazy side of Phuket that the authorities refuse to tackle; despite them being illegal.
The two ladies decided to take in the famous Ping Pong show. This is primarily a show that consists of Thai girls and their attributes with their vaginas. Yes, patrons may sit captivated as Thai girls open beer bottles, shoot darts at balloons, snub out candles and even produce a string of razor blades from and using their vaginas.
During the show, one of the ladies decided to take photographs with her mobile phone, but was quickly blocked by a staff member from doing so. When she enquired as to why, she was told that she would be arrested by the police – this is most strange as the Thai Police have always maintained that the famous Ping Pong shows don’t exist and indeed they have investigated several times and found nothing.
The story ends with the two Thai ladies being highly disenfranchised with Phuket and upset that Thai girls could act in such a way in order to entertain people for money.
This latest story clearly indicates that Thais do find such activities highly offensive and that how the lure of money (or entertainment in regards to foreign tourists and expats) will take precedence over the morals of people.
Patong of course is just one small area of Phuket, however when the Thai authorities are willing to turn a blind eye, or even get paid under the table to allow such activities, it is little wonder why the rest of Phuket and indeed Thailand is garnering an international reputation as being one of the most seedy holiday destinations on the planet.
