TOP SCIENTISTS PREDICT MANKIND IS DOOMED – Our little planet that floats in space revolving around our Sun is ultimately doomed.
The sun will continue to grow larger over the next 4 billion years until it dies. When that occurs it will explode and take the Earth with it and Earth will burn and explode into trillions of tiny pieces that will then be scattered throughout our known universe; and probably beyond.
Well 4 billion years is an awful long way off and it’s obvious none of us will be worrying about that event.
Regardless to the Earth’s ultimate fate we do have other problems to consider; for instance the issues with mankind’s growing population and with it using up the Earth’s natural resources. Yes this is something most of us think about and it is already well established that mankind really is killing the very planet that sustains our existence.
Apart from this being an issue there are other things that could end the existence of man and a number of the best scientific minds have been considering and working on these issues.
Currently Professor’s Stephen Hawkins, Robert May and Lord Rees have been studying a number of factors that could well wipe out mankind; and disturbingly in a relatively short period of time. These issues include:
Technology: We are all aware of just how far technology has come in just the last 100 years. We’ve basically gone from walking around to visiting other planets. Yes, mankind has achieved so much but what about the future?
There are already advancements in the technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and whilst some might perceive movies such as ‘Judgment Day’ as pure fantasy others see it as a peek into our perilous future.
Laugh if you will but in the 1940’s parents laughed at their children’s comic books that depicted space travel – less than 30 years later, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
The fear here is that if we develop intelligent artificial life that becomes independent of us, then that life could well perceive us as a threat and even use our Earth’s natural resources for their own gain.
Such an event could quite easily leave us almost indefensible and cause our demise.
Viruses: Mankind certainly has been industrious in developing ways to kill their fellow man. We are already fully aware that Western Governments have biological weapons of mass destruction.
We are always told that such weapons would never be used and if this were true then why develop them in the first place.
It may be the case that mankind never intentionally uses viruses and bacteria that have no known cure but what would happen if an accident occurred? The truth is that any airborne pathogen would likely wipe out hundreds of millions before a cure could be found.
Consider HIV and AIDS; even now there is no known cure despite vast efforts – if something much worse escaped that could simply infect through inhalation do you really think mankind could survive?
The Internet: Now you might think that the internet is a just a communications tool but it is already well established it could also be used as a weapon by terrorist organizations.
Since the birth of the internet we have already witnessed a number of cyber attacks; many that go unreported due to national security concerns.
Only last year the Anonymous Group closed down Master Card and there have been countless incursions into the U.S Intelligence Services and Military systems.
What would happen if a terrorist organization were to use the internet and create say a ‘Fire Sale’?
A fire sale basically means ‘everything must go’; this often refers to the basics of Power, Water and Communications.
Almost everything is run by microchips and therefore any such attack could wipe out hundreds of millions of lives and send us right back to the Stone Age.
Food Disruption: We rely on transportation methods to deliver our food but what if this was disrupted? According to the leading scientists most western countries have a stockpile of no more than 48 hours worth of food.
This may appear a little worrisome but the truth is that anything longer than that; under certain conditions, food products begin to perish and therefore it is not economically viable to stockpile more.
It doesn’t matter what method was used to disrupt the food supply chain as it would cause panic buying and as supplies become more depleted this in turn would result in mass riots.
We would, if you like, simply turn upon each other until only a few remained and even they would eventually succumb to starvation unless they were able to adapt quickly to cultivation.
Weather Patterns: Have you ever noticed how some people say that the summers appear hotter and the winters colder?
The issue here is that as we destroy more of our natural resources; such as deforestation, raping the oceans and burning fossil fuels, we are changing our climate.
In turn we are now facing more violent weather systems; look at the devastation Hurricane Katrina caused in the Southern United States a few years back.
Mother Nature can only put up with so much of mankind’s meddling before she strikes back and we are beginning to see a turn in weather patterns that are detrimental for the existence of mankind.
War: Ah yes this is one of mankind’s favourite pastimes for no matter what day or time of the year it happens to be there are elements of mankind warring with one another.
The upside to this is that it is a form of ‘population control’ and whilst this may sound cold, without global conflicts it is likely our current population of 7 billion would have far exceeded 10 billion – we’re talking since the birth of man of course.
Natural resources are already running out and mankind will fight one another over what remains. We’ve seen a classic example of this with the Iraqi War for it was never about the removal of a dictator but simply a way for the U.S to get its hands on the Iraqi oil.
Nuclear Apocalypse: There are times were we would like to think that the possibility of an all-out nuclear war is behind us; after all the Cold War between Russia and the West has long been laid to rest… or has it?
The U.S and other western nations have been continuously worrying about Iran’s developments of its nuclear program. The Iranians haven’t actually invaded any other country since the early 17th Century but their nuclear advancements are causing concern.
Right now we have the conflict in Syria. The Russians are siding, along with Iran, with Syria – could this be the catalyst for all-out thermo-nuclear war?
If the U.S were to strike Syria, and Iran and Russia came to the aide of their ally could this spark World War 3 in which a nuclear response is used?
If any such device were used it would automatically prompt other countries to use their arsenal; a result that would almost certainly wipe out 90 per cent of the world’s population through the initial blasts and the perusing aftermath of nuclear fallout.
It might be that no known government ever uses such weapons but what if a terrorist organization were to get their hands on a nuclear bomb? Again the repercussions would be horrific for governments would then be looking for the country that supplied such a weapon and in return this could be the catalyst for such an event.
Asteroid: Space is a big place and its common knowledge there are a lot of asteroids out there that could easily wipe out life on Earth as we know it.
Such an event is known as an ‘Extinction Level Event’ (ELE); it has happened before and it is only a matter of time before the Earth gets hit again.
The last known occurrence was of course in the Jurassic period where the dinosaurs were wiped out after an asteroid, some six miles across, slammed into Earth with the force equal to thousands of times of all the nuclear weapons mankind currently stockpiles.
We’ve all seen numerous movies but again as with movies like Judgment Day they are not all purely science fiction.
The current group of eminent scientists is however, despite the odds stacked against them, trying to find a way for mankind to survive any catastrophe that nature or mankind could deliver.
The ideology behind their efforts is simply to preserve remnants of mankind should such an event occur. Of course most of us would still perish but it is hoped that some may survive in order to rebuild a better world.
Mankind considers itself as the ultimate intelligence species on Earth and yet very few, if any, other life-forms on this planet go to such lengths to destroy the environment or indeed one another.
Maybe our time is nigh, mankind has had its chance as a species and failed miserably. What kind of extinction level event will mankind face? If you look closely at the list above then you will quickly realize that all but one will to be man-made.
Apart from an asteroid strike, which we have no control over, even the weather issues we have attributed to. As for the rest I honestly think it’ll be a virus that gets us in the end – yes one of the smallest things known to man, most of them being what man has produced, will finally bring about our downfall.
When will this happen is the question on many people’s minds… the answer to that really depends on our level of stupidity. As a species that purports to be of such high intellect we are probably one of nature’s most careless and hapless creations.
