US Relocates Staff from Nairobi Embassy Due to Al Qaeda Threat

CNN – The United States is relocating some staff from its embassy in Kenya to other countries because of “recent changes in Kenya’s security situation,” the State Department announced Friday. The embassy will remain open.

“The U.S. government continues to receive information about potential terrorist threats aimed at U.S., Western, and Kenyan interests in Kenya, including the Nairobi area and the coastal cities of Mombasa and Diani,” the State Department said in a statement.

Al Qaeda terrorists bombed the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in August 1998, killing 224 people, including 12 U.S. citizens.
